Queen’s Baton Relay

The CGA Malaysia welcomed the arrival of the Queen’s Baton to Malaysia on Monday, 16 October 2017.

The Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) Team consisting of Ms. Kerry Thompson (Team Liaison), Ms. Keri Algar Cocks (Media Liaison), Mr. Raymond Kitching (Asset Custodian) and Mr. Colin McPherson (Photographer) was met by 2 senior officers of the CGA Malaysia namely Mr. Norhashimi Hussain and Mr. Fong Wan Hor upon their arrival at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The QBR Team was transported to the Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur by the official vehicle of the CGA Malaysia.

Upon the arrival at the Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur, Ms. Kerry Thompson of the QBR Team handed the Queen’s Baton to Tan Sri Dr. M. Jegathesan, the representative of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF). Dr. Jegathesan then officially handed the Queen’s Baton to HRH Prince Tunku Imran, the President of the Commonwealth Games Association Malaysia (CGA Malaysia). This event was followed by a Press Conference.

At the Press Conference, Dr. Jegathesan gave a brief introduction of the QBR, the history and the message behind the Queen’s Baton. Ms. Keri Algar Cocks of the QBR Team announced that the Queen’s Baton is on its 388-day tour to all 70 Commonwealth Nations and Territories, starting from the Buckingham Palace on Monday, 13 March 2017 (Commonwealth Day), covering 230,000 km to its final destination, the Opening Ceremony of the XXI Commonwealth Games Gold Coast 2018 on Wednesday, 4 April 2018. Kuala Lumpur is numbered 54th in the international sequence of the QBR tour.

HRH Prince Tunku Imran welcomed the Queen’s Baton as well as the QBR Team and announced that the CGA Malaysia will be organizing the QBR and other related programs in collaboration with all the stakeholders of sports in Malaysia, the Australian High Commission, the Tourism and Events of Queensland and the sponsors of CGA Malaysia from Tuesday, 17 October 2017 till Friday, 20 October 2017.

In Malaysia, the QBR is scheduled on Tuesday, 17 October 2017, from 8.00 am to 10.00 am at the National Stadium Bukit Jalil, the stadium that hosted the Opening Ceremony of the XVI Commonwealth Games Kuala Lumpur 1998. All the stakeholders of sports in Malaysia namely the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the National Sports Council, the National Sports Institute and the National Sports Associations have been invited by the CGA Malaysia to celebrate the QBR together with the Commonwealth Games athletes and medalists of Malaysia.

In attendance at the Press Conference which was held in the Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur were Dato’ Mohd Nazifuddin Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib (Vice President of CGA Malaysia), Ms. Pamela Cue (Senior Public Affairs and Policy Support Manager of the Australian High Commission) and Borobi, the official mascot of the XXI Commonwealth Games Gold Coast 2018.
