A Fencer That Aims To Make The Grade To Tokyo

From a quarter-final defeat at the 2017 SEA Game to a silver medal in the 2019 Manila SEA Games.

Fencer Hans Yoong proved the adage that nothing was impossible.

‘”My loss in 2017 gave me something to think about. From that day I developed my mental strength to be better,” said Hans.

“I travel a lot, my training in the United States has helped me to improve my performance”

Despite being busy with training and maintaining his career in fencing, Hans Yoong is also a full-time student at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana since August 2019.

The Notre Dame School is well known for their fencing program.

“Whenever I do my training in the United States, the sparring level makes a huge of a difference compared to when I did my training in Malaysia as I had the opportunity to train with the world-class fencer’s champion of England and others,” said the 20 year old fencer.

Hans Yoong who is aiming for a spot in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics is busy preparing himself for the Olympic’s Asian Zine qualifier next year.

With the impact of the Covid19 pandemic on the world, Hans tries to keep on going on by looking at it positively.

“I was doing a lot of fitness to keep fit a few months before we got back to the club. The period of staying at home allowed me to improve on the errors I made in the past,” said the Kuala Lumpur born athlete.

Hans admitted that without his parents’ encouragement and support, he would not be where he is right now.

“I hope the youngsters will show deep interest in fencing and be better than me in representing our beloved country”
