The competition initially involved 23 nations with the draw made up of 4 zones, Asian, European, American, and Australasian. The winners of each zone then competed for the right to play defending champion Indonesia in the Challenge Round.

A powerful Malaysian team coasted through the Asian zone by beating India and Pakistan, both with the same score of 8-1. The inter-zone matches and Challenge Round finale were held in Jakarta, Indonesia. Malaysia won its fourth title after beating Indonesia in the Challenge Round after unusual circumstances. With Malaysia leading Indonesia 4 matches to 3 in the best of nine series, the play was suspended during the 8th match due to unruly crowd behavior.
