Hidayat Hamidon was from Medan Indonesia and he choose Malaysian citizenship in 1995. His first medal for Malaysia was at the SEA Games 1995 held in Chiang Mai, Thailand where he won a silver medal for over 59kg event. After that, he had won medals in various competitions. Two years later, he won the gold medal at the SEA Games held in Jakarta in 64 kg event-. He continued his success in weightlifting by winning gold medal in the 1998 Commonwealth Games, 48 years after the last time Malaysia won gold in weightlifting in 1950. Along his participation in Commonwealth Games, he had won 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze in 69kg event. At the 2002 Commonwealth Games held in Manchester, he won bronze in the snatch and silver for overall. At the 2005 SEA Games in Manila, he contributed a bronze medal for the country.
