Eighty two-year-old S. Kathirvale had reasons to be elated when he was inducted into the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) – Hall of Fame. Born 1st January 1929 in Selangor, Known as Mahaguru for his deep knowledge of the laws of the games. In the early 50s, S.Kathiravale played football and hockey, for Selangor Teachers Union. It was no surprise then that S.Kathiravale later became an active member and held various positions in the Football Association of Selangor.  Kathirvale, a former FIFA referee and FIH umpire, said he was pleased to be on stage with some of the top officials and athletes in Malaysia.

“I started being involved as a match official, in both hockey and football, when I was 28. It was very challenging then and there were days when abuses were hurled at me. But today, the OCM had made me proud with this honour,’’ said Kathirvale.

S.Kathiravale became more and more immersed in the development of football and hockey for the country and most notably served as the Referee Instructor, conducted matches, referee courses, Seminars in over 33 countries organized by FIFA/AFC and FAM.  Associated with FAM since July 1957 (1st Merdeka Games) till 2006 (48.5years). Was conferred the P.J.K by H.R.H the Sultan of Pahang. Associated with MHF since 1960 to 2002 (42 years). In total contributed to Malaysian Sports a total of 90 years. Since retirement involved actively with the Petaling Estate Mariamman Temple and was awarded the Golden Shawl in October 2008 for services rendered to the Temple.

Sivapalan. Kathiravale, the man who officiated Arsenal’s first visit to Malaysia some 36 years ago.
