Soong Poh Wah was born on October 1950 and was a member of the National Table Tennis team from 1966 to 1975. He was an Asian Youth Runners -up in 1967. He won the National Men Singles Table Tennis Champion in 1969-1971 and a gold medal in 1969 SEAP Games in Rangoon. He was a member of the first Malaysian Table Tennis contingent to visit China and participated in the Afro – Asian Table Tennis Championships in Beijing.

Being very committed and passionate for the development of Table Tennis, he became the chief coach of the National team from 1977 to 1982 and attended an Advanced Coaching Course in 1980. He was the team manager for Table Tennis Association of Malaysia for several games, such as Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2014 and Delhi 2010, Asian Games Guangzhou 2010 and 4 consecutive SEA Games from 2007 until 2013.
