IOC-Trophy-2011

Following the sad and untimely death of Tan Sri Alex Lee in October 1999, a Vice President of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM), OCM established the Tan Sri Alex Lee Athletes’ Education Fund in his memory in late 1999. The Education Fund is to provide yearly study grants, of a maximum of RM3,000/= each per year, to former and present national athletes, to further their tertiary education in Malaysia.

The response to the Education Fund was overwhelming and within the first five months, RM251,050/= were received from friends and supporters of the late Tan Sri Alex Lee.

From 2000 to 2002, scholarships were awarded to deserving national athletes to further their tertiary education in Malaysia. By the end of 2002, the Fund had depleted to around RM200,000/=, with no visible means of sustainable inflow of funds.

In 2003, Y.Bhg. Dato’ Thomas Lee, Chairman of the Tan Sri Alex Lee Athletes’ Education Fund Committee and the Saujana Golf & Country Club, decided to organise an annual charity golf tournament to raise funds for the Tan Sri Alex Lee Athletes’ Education Fund. Saujana Golf & Country Club will provide the Golf course at no charge to OCM, all technical support, source sponsors and assistance in the organisation of the charity golf tournament.

The 1st Tan Sri Alex Lee Charity Golf Tournament was organized on 25th June 2003, as an annual fund raising event for the Tan Sri Alex Lee Athletes’ Education Fund and a sum of around RM25,000/= was raised at that tournament.

From 2003 onwards the annual Tan Sri Alex Lee Charity Golf Tournament was organized by the Saujana Golf & Country Club as one of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Over the last 8 years, over RM300,000/= has been raised.

By the end of 2010, the fund stands at RM570,000/= and a total of 29 scholarships have been awarded, to former and present national athletes. The generous and valuable contributions by Saujana Golf & Country Club over the last 8 years has enabled the Tan Sri Alex Lee Athletes’ Education Fund to increase from around RM200,000/= in 2003 to RM570,000/= at the end of 2010.

The example set by Saujana Golf & Country Club has encouraged and motivated a number of private golf clubs to organise golf tournaments for sports and charity organizations.

The 2011 IOC Trophy will be presented to the Saujana Golf & Country Club at the 19th OCM Annual Dinner on 16th December 2011 at the OCM Indoor Sports Arena, Wisma OCM, Kuala Lumpur.

The 9th Tan Sri Alex Lee Charity Golf 2011 will be held on 29th November 2011 at the Saujana Golf & Country Club.
