One of our most memorable moments was perhaps when our young rhythmic gymnast team secured a gold medal and stunning the nation at the same time, where nine (9) countries battle it out in this competitive event including Malaysia, Canada, Australia, Cyprus, New Zealand, England, South Africa, Northern Ireland and Scotland. The quartet that took home the gold medal for women’s “Rhythmic all round team event” comprised of Carolyn Au-Yong, Chee Kiat Thye, El Regina Tajudin and Sarina Sundara Rajah. The entire Putra Indoor Stadium, now known as Axiata Arena, along with our 4th Prime Minister – Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad who was also there to support our gymnasts, jumped for joy when it was announced that our girls were the winners of that event. Malaysia’s team collected the highest marks with 93.023 points, followed closely by Canada (2nd Place) & Australia (3rd Place). Further more, this winning was Malaysia’s 1st Gold medal for Gymnastic Rhythmic in the Commonwealth Games history and it was more than what the Malaysia Gymnastic Federation (MGF) targeted, which is only a Bronze in this category. Currently, all of them is still actively involved in the sport of Gymnastics. With their prowess and vast experiences, coaching the younger and upcoming generations in their pursuit of producing world class gymnast in their own respective disciplines.
