Yang Siow Ming began his magnificent hockey career when he represented the school and later the Malacca Combined schools in 1960 while he was only in Form One. He went on to represent the Federation Combined Schools and in 1962 began to turn out regularly for the state team. Training for the Malaysian Hockey Team for the Tokyo Olympic Games began when he was to sit for his School Certificate Examination and thus he missed the Olympics.

However, he later was given a chance to play for the country at the 5th Asian Games in Bangkok. He shone at the games and was selected to the Asian Hockey Team. In 1968, while in the University, he was chosen to play for our nation at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City (15th placed) and 1972 Olympic Games in Munich (8th placed).
