Born in Kepala Batas, Penang in 1959, Zaiton completed her Bachelor of Education (Physical Education) at University Pertanian Malaysia in 1987. She was the recipient of the Chancellor’s Gold Medal Award for being the overall best student for the graduation year of 1987. She was  awarded a scholarship by the National Sports Council to do her masters programme Applied Sports Psychology at San Diego State University, San Diego, California USA in 1992. Besides athletics, she has also represented the school at the National level, state level, Inter-varsity level in Hockey, Basketball, Netball,Softball and Volleyball from 1973 –1987.

In 1975 she attended the Seap Games (now SEA GAMES) as the beginning of her sports career and made her debut at the Asean Youth Athletic Tournament.Won six gold medal at the St. Georges Sport Events.Long Jump Gold medallist, new records for 200m (26.7sec) and 400m (59.3 sec) in the Penang School Sport Council.

Zaiton started her illustrious athletics career with a gold medal in the 4x400m relay at the Bangkok Asian Games in 1978.She then contributed another gold in the same event in her first SEA Games in 1979 in Jakarta. In 1981, she participated the Sea Games in Manila where she won three gold and a silver. (Won the Heptathlon gold medal (5338pts), 4 x 400m, 4 x 100m gold, high jump silver and long jump bronze) and crowned as “Heptathlon Queen” in the Sea Games.

In the following year, she won a Gold medal in the SEA Games Heptathlon events and once again crowned the “Heptathlon Queen”, in the Sea Games. While studying at the Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, Zaiton represented the University on many occasions both nationally and internationally.In 1984 Won gold medal in Asean Cup in Manila, Philippines. In 1985 Zaiton withdraw from the 1985 Bangkok Sea Games to concentrate on her studies. After three-month trainning in Perth, Australia for the 1989 Sea Games, she won the heptathlon gold medal for the third time in the Sea Games in Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur.Zaiton finally retiring from competitive participation after the 1989 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games.

After her retirement from competiton, she continued to be active as a coach and administrator at national level in Athletics.
