Failure fails to fear Safiyah

Siti Safiyah began bowling at the age of 9 and made her first debut as national bowler by winning the 2005 Malaysian Open when she was only 14 years old.

Safiyah’s parents encouragement will always be her main reason behind her taking up bowling as her career and reaching the international level.

“Both my parents were bowlers and I started to have interest in bowling when they often took me to bowling league when I was young” said Safiyah.

“When I became the youngest bowler to win the 2005 Malaysian Open, my passion in bowling grew deeper”

However, the 29 years old bowler admitted that it takes a great deal of commitment and strong mental strength to sustain her achievements and performance.

“It is not easy to handle yourself at the peak of the tournament. I always overthink of the techniques, steps, movement that I should make and what mistakes that I might encounter”

“But I always remind myself on all the things that I have sacrificed throughout the years and I realised that it is never the time to give up” added the bowler.

Safiyah together with her team ended a 10 years drought to win the Women’s Team gold medal at the 2017 World Bowling Championships in Las Vegas.

“Actually, we did not notice that it has been 10 years since we last won the title” said the Selangor born athlete.

“In any tournaments, I will always do my utmost and try to be a great addition to my team in order to deliver medals for our beloved country”

Every ounce of sweat on the ground is another ounce of joy when the scoreboard is in an athlete’s favour. Safiyah faced all the highs and lows to reach her current stage.

“If we want to grow, we need to get over any fear we may have of making mistakes because mistakes are meant to be learned from” Safiyah added as she welcomes the newcomers in sports.
