Remembering KDYMM Paduka Ayahanda Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah
The OCM Executive Board and Management would like to express their deepest condolences to His Majesty Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Her Majesty Raja Permaisuri Agong, His Royal Highness Regent of Pahang, the Royal Family of Pahang and the people of Pahang on the sad demise of KDYMM Paduka Ayahanda Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Abu Bakar Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mu’adzam Shah at the age of 88 on Wednesday, 22 May 2019.
Almarhum Sultan Ahmad Shah is synonym with the development of Football in Malaysia. He was the sport leader who had turned the standard of Football in Malaysia from amateur to professional as it is today.
Almarhum Sultan Ahmad Shah was given the full mandate by the Football fraternity with the election to the following portfolios:
- President of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) – 1984 to 2014 (30 years).
- President of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) – 2011 to 2019 (8 years).
- President of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) – 1994 to 2002 (8 years).
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) had bestowed the “Diamond of Asia Award” to Almarhum Sultan Ahmad Shah on 23 November 2011 in recognition of his contributions towards the development of Football in the Asian Continent.
The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) had presented the “Order of Merit Award” to Almarhum Sultan Ahmad Shah during the 62nd FIFA Congress on 24 May 2012.
Many are not aware that Almarhum Sultan Ahmad Shah was one of the earliest recipients of the “Olympic Gold Order”, the highest award of the Olympic Movement, which was established by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1975.
The IOC Olympic Gold Order was presented to Almarhum Sultan Ahmad Shah by the IOC Vice President, Mr. Ashwini Kumar, on 13 April 1984, at the National Palace. Almarhum Sultan Ahmad Shah is the only Malaysian to have received such a prestigious award by the IOC.
Besides his active involvement in Football, Almarhum Sultan Ahmad Shah was also very supportive of the development of Hockey. He was one of the co-founders and Royal Patron of the Sultan Ahmad Shah Veteran Hockey Association since 1981.
The demise of Almarhum Sultan Ahmad Shah is a great loss to the Olympic and Sport Movements in Malaysia.
