Sivasangari A Rising Star

The pandemic of Covid-19 affects all individuals worldwide and so does our national Squash player, Sivasangari.

According to Siva, the pandemic gave a big impact on her as she is studying in the United States and she had to return back to Malaysia due to the lockdown.

As an athlete, she could not do much during the Movement Control Order (MCO) because the squash court was close due to the standard operating procedure (SOP).

“I just concentrate working on my endurance with outdoor running and doing some strength at home, though I felt affected with the situation, I need to stay positive and get used with the new norm” said the Kedah born athlete.

Not only does Covid-19 impact athlete preparation, it also cancels most of the squash championships.

“Once the pandemic is over, I will try my best to achieve my target. As for now, I will work hard in improving my performance and be prepared for the upcoming championships” said Siva, who is aiming to be in the world top 30.

The 21 years old athlete takes our Squash Queen, Dato Nicol David and Raneem Albinari as her idol in sport. She really looks up to those two athletes as she believes that besides talent, good personality is what will help athletes to remain longer in their career journey.

“To see someone being top in the world rank for quite long time and remaining humble on and off court at the same time really inspires me to be just like them” added Siva.

Most of the athletes would say that during training or tournament, the worst moment in their journey is having injury and not being able to compete in tournaments, but for our 2018 Asian Games silver medallist, it is a different story.

“The thought of giving up crosses my mind as I had once lost my pace in balancing both my career and studies” said Siva.

“But that is a thing of the past, I chose to remain optimistic and look back at all the successes I have accomplished every time the thought revisit my mind”

“We need to truly fall in love with everything we do. We are not supposed to do anything just because someone forced us to. We need to have passion as it will inspire us to keep on doing better” advises Siva as she welcomes the younger generation to get more involved in sports.
